  • Professional Days

    We want to share the knowledge we have gained after 40 years of delivering excellent, quality hospice care and have a duty to provide education. It’s important that we continue to dedicate our time to educate the current and future health and social care professionals.

    So our professional day is aimed at these professionals who are seeking to be exposed to hospice services and spend time with our specialised members of staff.

     

    A typical professional day…*

    9.00am: Arrive

    9.00am – 9.15am: Introductions and setting individual objectives for the visit

    9.15am – 10.15am: Hospice tour

    10.15am – 10.30am: Light refreshments and networking

    10.30am – 11.30am: Meet the team

    • Clinical nurse specialist  – Community team
    • Inpatient nursing team
    • Palliative care doctor
    • Physiotherapist
    • Occupational therapist
    • Social worker

    11.30am – 12.30pm: ‘Ask it Basket’, ‘Questions and Answers’ session with the team, time to reflect on objectives

    12.30pm: End of session

  • Clinical Placements

    The Hospice offers placement opportunities to health & social care professionals.

    All applications are made via a placement request form and returned to the education department. If you are interested in placement opportunities, please return the request form at least four weeks prior to your identified placement date.

  • Student Placements

    Choosing a career in hospice care is choosing to make a difference. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice offer student nurses the opportunity to explore the services offered by the Hospice through our introductory sessions, which are facilitated by clinical staff and include a tour of the hospice.

    Sessions are available to student nurses from The University of Birmingham and Birmingham City University

  • Summer School

    Summer School is free to attend, lasting a single day and aimed at 16-18 year olds who are keen to learn more about what it is like to work in a hospice/healthcare professional setting.

    You will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions with:

    • Doctors
    • Nurses
    • Physiotherapists
    • Occupational therapists
    • Social workers

    Activities will include:

    • An introduction to hospice life
    • Hospice tour
    • Hospice myth busting
    • A day in the life of a healthcare professional
    • A patient and carer’s story

    Learning will be delivered in a creative and professional environment by trained and experienced facilitators.

  • Bespoke Training

    We are able to deliver our education programme offsite and can come to your organisation. If you have specific training requirements, we can develop a programme and deliver it in a location to suit you.
