Maureen, 81, is loving learning at Living Well Centre

16 December 2024

AGE is no barrier to learning for 81-year-old Maureen Brackpool who is having reading and writing lessons from fellow patient Cathy Mountford at Birmingham Hospice’s Living Well Centre.

Maureen, who lives in Yardley Wood, has struggled with reading and writing since childhood but took a brave step when she asked retired teacher Cathy for help during their weekly sessions.

Cathy has been able to use her skills teaching children with dyslexia to support her friend.

While the lessons have only been going for just over a month, they have already made a difference with Maureen being able to read some of her beloved Bible.

“People have tried several times but only Cathy has been able to really help me,” said Maureen.

“It is a great comfort to me to able to read the Bible. When I am down and feeling a bit rough, I get a Bible out and read a passage and it puts all my worries on someone else’s shoulders.”

Our Living Well Centres provide priceless opportunities for those living with long-term illness to take part in activities, make friends and meet people in similar situations as themselves.

Cathy’s positive experience of the centre has helped rebuild her confidence. After being diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing treatment, she was left housebound and had to learn to walk again.

She was initially worried about attending the centre after being referred but believes it has been a positive experience.

“The first time I came here I cried because I was so scared of getting out of the house and being somewhere else. I was so worried, but it got easier,” said Cathy.

“It’s nice to be with people who understand exactly what you’ve been through. We don’t talk about it all the time but if it’s on your mind or something’s happening, you can have a chat about it.”
