“From when my parents moved onto our road over 20 years ago, our neighbours Wendy and Peter have always been there for me and my family. Wendy’s love, kindness and friendship was treasured and cherished by her many, many friends.
“Wendy had a great sense of humour, and watching her and Peter’s devoted relationship as I grew older shaped the person I am today, and I do hope that Wendy is proud.
“Last February, Wendy was cared for at the hospice in Selly Park after being admitted to hospital for cancer treatment. She was able to spend her last weeks looked after by the angelic nurses with dignity and in peace and comfort.
“On 8 February, Wendy passed away at the hospice. Peter and her family were supported with the same amount of empathy that they deliver to every patient and their family each day. That is why it is crucial to ensure that Birmingham Hospice can continue to give this same support and love to every patient, because everyone deserves it.
“Since then, I have worked with my neighbours to fundraise for the hospice in her proud memory. We have had tabletop sales, bingo nights and other events at the Loyal Caledonian Corks Club.
“I am so grateful and touched by the kindness from our local community. I continue to be amazed that nearly everyone who walks past donates what they can, because it is more important that they are showing kindness and generosity, rather than just walking past. Everyone, no matter their age or income, donates what they can, which is the most important thing about our fundraisers.
“The events are organised by Peter and myself and my neighbours Isaac, Lucas and Rafferty, and we all thoroughly enjoy them. Afterwards, I feel so proud and satisfied, but most importantly we have all made Wendy proud.
“The Fundraising Team have been so helpful and supportive, and really value what we do, and we value the hospice’s support. It’s so easy to help them out, and I can wholeheartedly guarantee that you will be so proud.
I would recommend starting off with tabletop garden sales, and coffee mornings, and definitely find a small business near you that can help you out.
“It’s been an honour to fundraise for Birmingham Hospice, and Birmingham is so privileged to have it, not only when people need specialist end of life care, but all the love, compassion and dignity they give patients and their families.
“Wendy, Peter, myself and all their friends and family are exceptionally grateful for all of Birmingham Hospice’s support and kindness.
We will never forget the hospice, and it will be treasured in all our hearts for ever and ever.
“Together, each small step adds up to one big step towards making every moment matter.”
