Betty and Michael support Birmingham Hospice for two decades

23 May 2024

Betty and Michael, from Sheldon, have been volunteering for our hospice for 20 years and the couple are once again preparing to donate their time to this year’s Big Brum Bucket.

Each year, fantastic volunteers take to the streets, shopping centres and supermarkets of Birmingham to collect bucket-loads of funds for Birmingham Hospice.

This year, Big Brum Bucket will take place on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 July.

In 2023, £10,000 was raised and this year, we hope to beat this by having the most successful Big Brum Bucket so far. To do this, we need our incredible army of volunteers.

Betty and Michael take part as a way to support a great local cause. They said: “We find Big Brum Bucket very rewarding and we’re happy to give our time.

“It’s really interesting to meet lots of people out in the community and chat to them about the excellent care the hospice provides.

“Each year, we try to get even more people on board, and everyone is always so happy to support the hospice.”

The kind-hearted couple even go the extra mile for us by taking around 80 collection tins and giving them out to their friends and members of their parish. Betty and Michael then organise a ‘counting session’ at their church and bring us a cheque with the total raised.

They shared: “We were absolutely delighted with the amount raised last year and we’ve already signed up for Big Brum Bucket 2024.

“We found people were more than happy to put their spare change in the tins and surprisingly, only one person said that they didn’t carry cash.”

We’re so grateful for Betty and Michael’s continued support over the last 20 years, alongside our other brilliant bucket-teers! By donating just three hours of your time this July, you can help raise vital funds for local people living with a terminal diagnosis, and their families.
