A year of giving back to the community

25 July 2024

Melissa Magestro had just moved to England from the USA when she began looking for ways to get out of the house, meet people, and give back to the community. Volunteering had always been important to her and she had been actively involved in various charities back home, so was eager to continue that tradition here.

Melissa has now been volunteering at our Reloved Brum charity shop in Harborne for over a year. Sometimes she is in the stock room sorting through donations, pricing, and steaming items. At other times she is on the shop floor, straightening the rails, ringing up the till, and helping customers. Some volunteers focus on specific areas, such as books or records, but Melissa is happy to assist wherever she is needed.

One particularly rewarding experience that stands out for Melissa involved an elderly woman who was blind. The woman came into the shop looking for wine glasses, and Melissa helped her pick them out and complete the purchase. She was impressed by the woman’s independence and determination to live her life to the full despite her disability. This encounter left a lasting impact on Melissa and highlighted the meaningful connections she makes through her volunteer work.

Melissa highly recommends volunteering at the charity shop. She described it as a “well-run and organised place, with a management team that is professional and supportive.” The volunteers are friendly creating a relaxed and enjoyable environment. For Melissa, volunteering here is a “fun and rewarding experience” alongside her full-time job.

Melissa also appreciates the positive feedback from customers. Many comment on the quality of the merchandise, the organisation of the shop, and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff and volunteers. This immensely positive shopping experience at Reloved Brum is a pleasant experience for everyone involved.

Melissa’s enthusiasm is evident in her approach to volunteering. She is always ready to help wherever she is needed, and her immense contributions have been significant for the shop and customers. Her story shows the importance of volunteering, and the difference one person can make in their community.
