How your support helped our teams bring Christmas to a family facing their hardest winter.
Last December, a father of five was living with motor neurone disease (MND) and being cared for at home by Birmingham Hospice. His health was declining fast. His partner, who was also his main carer, was facing health problems of her own. With money already tight, Christmas was set to be one more worry for the family.
But, our nurses and care teams were there for them. And because they were there, they saw what the whole family was going through.
So they went further than supporting with clinical care. Teams from across the hospice came together to make sure all five children, aged 9 to 18, had presents to open on Christmas morning.
“The children were delighted,” says Sue Coney from the Personal Health Budget Team (pictured here on the right with colleague Debra Gregory) at Birmingham Hospice. “But it was their eldest son’s reaction that showed just how much it meant. As he unwrapped his new drone, he said: ‘I always wanted one of these but knew we couldn’t afford one.’”
