"They made us feel safe": how Birmingham Hospice cared for Neil and supported his family at Christmas

When 53-year-old Neil Stokes was told that he had advanced oesophageal cancer, he and his wife Jo were devastated. Within weeks, his health deteriorated, and Neil was admitted to Birmingham Hospice, Selly Park on 21st December.

“He was so poorly when he arrived,” said Jo. “But the hospice team immediately made him more comfortable. Their professionalism and compassion were simply amazing – they made us feel safe.”

The hospice staff ensured Neil’s pain was managed and supported the whole family. Jo, along with their three children, Charlie, Laura and Tom, were given space to stay together in a family room, which they decorated with Christmas lights and photos from home. Friends and relatives were able to visit, and the hospice helped the family make the most of precious time together.

On Christmas Day, they shared gifts, enjoyed a glass of wine, and watched the Gavin and Stacey special by Neil’s bedside. “The team were so attentive and kind – nothing was too much trouble,” Jo recalled.

Neil died peacefully in the early hours of Boxing Day, surrounded by his family. “Although it was heartbreaking,” said Jo, “the care we received was incredible. The hospice gave Neil dignity and gave us strength. I will always be grateful to them.”
