Remembering the life of our volunteer Milly

18 July 2024

Alice “Milly” Milton, who recently passed away at the remarkable age of 105, leaves behind a legacy of passion and dedication. For over 25 years, from the 1980s through to the 2000s, Milly was a cherished volunteer at our Heeley Road charity shop, contributing significantly to Birmingham Hospice. Her nephew, Peter, shared the story of her extraordinary life and commitment.

Milly was born on William Street in Ladywood, Birmingham. She witnessed a world that transformed from horse-drawn carts to the modern day. Describing his aunt, Peter recalled, “she was a lovely, charitable person, always meeting people with a smile and thriving on the company of others. Her warmth and kindness left a mark on everyone she met.”

Milly’s journey into volunteering at the shop was extremely personal. Peter explained, “My uncle Albert’s fiancée was one of the first patients treated at the hospice. This experience deeply moved both Milly and Albert, motivating them to start volunteering.” Milly devoted her time to serving customers and fundraising, while Albert took charge of repairing electrical items.

Milly spent several Saturdays, particularly in the Summer, selling items and organising raffles for what was then St Mary’s Hospice. Peter proudly said that “together, Milly and Albert raised thousands, if not tens of thousands of pounds for the hospice”.

One of the most prominent highlights of Milly’s volunteering career was her invitation to Buckingham Palace. Recognising her for over 25 years of voluntary work, she was invited to a garden party with Queen Elizabeth II. Peter shared: “She thoroughly enjoyed the day. She loved the excellent sandwiches, ice cream, cakes, tea, and coffee, all while a band played in the afternoon.”

Reflecting on his aunt’s enduring impact, Peter said: “She valued camaraderie and cherished the moments spent meeting people behind the counter. She was a valued member of the charitable community, and her contributions have left a lasting legacy.”

Milly’s life exemplifies the power of kindness and dedication. Her commitment to helping others and her joyful presence will be remembered and celebrated by all.
