Pupils from a Birmingham Primary School are breaking all of the uniform rules and coming to school in their pyjamas to support Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice this October.
The pyjama wearing antics are all part of the Hospice’s PJ Day campaign, a month long event that will run alongside the annual World Hospice Day.
The school, with pupils aged between 4 and 11 are taking on the challenge after being inspired by their role in last year’s Onesie day, where they raised £250.
Fundraising Projects Officer Sarah Barber said: “Last year we visited the school and gave them a presentation about the Hospice and the work we do. Between them they then organised a range of fundraising activity, including a pyjama day. It is fantastic that they have decided to get involved with this year’s campaign. PJ Day is all about helping people to understand that when you raise funds for the Hospice you are helping people to be comfortable – like most of us are when we wear our Pyjamas”
The pupils,are being assisted by teacher Jo Jex.
Jo said: “The pupils at the school are really embracing the challenge; they are doing the majority of the planning work without any input from teachers. As a school we think it is really important to help out charities, especially local ones. It gives the children a real sense of achievement when they see how the funds they raised are being used to help other people”
Pupil Mustafa, 8 said: We are taking part in the PJ Day because we know if we were in that situation, we would like to be looked after at a special place like the Hospice. It’s good to help people in need”
Ali, aged 10 added: “When you raise money for the Hospice, you are not just looking after the sick person, but the whole family”
Two of the pupils will be leaving the school for two new secondary schools in September, and plan to be ambassadors for the Hospice and hold their PJ Day’s at their new schools instead.
Beenash, 10 said “We have really enjoying supporting the Hospice, and raising money for such a good cause, we plan to talk to the teachers at our new schools about the work the Hospice does, and then organise our own PJ Day there”
All schools that sign up to take part in PJ Day will receive a free information pack filled with tips and ideas, and support from the Hospice’s fundraising team.
