Generous hospice nurses created an indoor street party, so that patients and their loved ones could watch the royal wedding in style.
Nurses and volunteers at Birmingham St Mary’s decked the Selly Park-based hospice with bunting and flags, and then hosted their very own royal tea party.
The big-hearted team served fizz, tea and homemade cakes, to ensure that people staying at the hospice could celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day.
There was even a royal wedding selfie station, so that families could take pictures together and remember the festivities.
Nursing assistants Hayley Kerrigan and Jill Gegg organised the special afternoon, as they recognised how important it was to some people to celebrate the royal nuptials.
Jill Gegg, who has worked at Birmingham St Mary’s for 23 years, said: “Today has been about celebrating and spending precious time with loved ones – and we have certainly done just that. There’s been a real buzz all afternoon and it was fantastic to get everyone together and raise a toast to the newlyweds.”
Hayley Kerrigan added: “For many of the people staying at the hospice, celebrating royal weddings is a tradition. That’s why we wanted to do something that was really special today, so that no one missed out on this happy occasion.”
Birmingham St Mary’s provides vital care and support to local people living with life-limiting illness. Every day, the hospice cares for 350 people across Birmingham and Sandwell – whether that’s at the hospice, in people’s own homes or in the community.
