How To Celebrate Turning 50

30 January 2017

On Sunday 23rd April, Sue will be taking to the streets of London as part of our London Marathon team! Here she is to explain why…

This will be my first marathon although I have run several half marathons before. I took up running several years ago to give up smoking.

I watched the first London Marathon back in 1981 with my dad, and have always wanted to run it. I’m 50 this year, and always wanted to run a full marathon by the time I was 50.

I’ve chosen to run in support of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice because in November last year my dad died of cancer, and was supported by a hospice-at-home charity in the last few weeks of his life. This enabled him to die at home surrounded by his family and beloved dog. The charity provided great comfort and support to the whole family, and this made me aware of the importance of end-of-life care and what great services organisations such as Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice provide.

I’m following a 16-week training plan, with my dog Minnie, running along the canal towpaths 4 times a week. These are two short runs; one medium; one long one every week – the important thing is to get the miles in. For me running is a meditative thing, providing a space in my head for quiet contemplation.

In addition to my Virgin Money giving page, part of what I do for a living is making and selling beautiful handcrafted wooden items from my narrowboat (such as earrings made from reclaimed lock-gate wood and towpath-wood buttons). I am planning an auction and sale of some of my work in Birmingham City Centre over the Easter weekend where we’ll be moored near Gas St Basin.

Thank you so much for your support Sue and best of luck with your training and the Marathon!
