Hospice wins diversity and inclusion award

3 March 2025

Birmingham Hospice is delighted to have won the Excellence in Inclusive People Development award at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Awards 2025.

This award recognises our commitment to diversity and inclusion in the recruitment and training of our people.

Our charity was also shortlisted for the Excellence in Training and Education title in recognition of our work training health professionals, carrying out work in schools and offering Corporate Bereavement Training.

Diversity and inclusion are of paramount importance to the charity, and we have recently revamped our recruitment and onboarding process to increase visibility of roles, to attract a diverse mix of candidates. Our commitment to equality also extends to the provision of training for staff to ensure they are sensitive to the cultural needs of our patients.

The hospice holds Investors in Diversity Silver accreditation, with our current status running until at least July 2025. We are also a Disability Confident Employer, in recognition of our efforts to change attitudes towards disabilities and unconscious bias within the workplace.

We have an active Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Group, with priorities based on the needs of our diverse patients and colleagues. As part of this they have hosted training sessions and educational talks and helped the charity to mark cultural celebrations such as Diwali, Eid and Vaisakhi. Our EDI group has also attended external events across the city to ensure the city’s diverse population is represented in our work, including taking part in the Birmingham Pride parade.

As healthcare professionals, we often work with patients from diverse backgrounds and experiences. It’s essential to recognise and address these issues to provide equitable and patient-centred care for all.
