When Jean’s mum, Merdella, was diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, it affected the whole family. Read her story and find out how Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is not only caring for Merdella but how it’s supporting Jean, her children and grandchildren too…

It’s obvious that the Hospice makes mum happy which of course, makes me happy too.

Ever since mum had a stroke in 2003, she’s suffered from a lot of different health problems. There’s been a lot of pain and upset along the way – not just for mum but for the whole family too – so it’s amazing to see her being cared for which helps alleviate that pain and instead bring joy.

After every visit to the Day Hospice, mum would tell me funny tales of donkey visits, the pamper sessions, and the friendships she made. It was so comforting to hear these stories – they did wonders for mum’s state of mind. I think too often, we assume care should just focus on the physical side of things and we forget that illness affects so much more. Of course, the nurses at the Hospice gave mum some great advice in helping to reduce her pain but they also supported her wellbeing too.

What was really great about the Day Hospice was that it also gave me peace of mind. I spend a lot of time caring for mum but I have a job, four children and four grandchildren, so it was comforting to know that mum was in good hands one day a week. This allowed me to catch up on any tasks that needed doing or any errands that needed running – and in the back of my mind, I always knew that mum was with someone and was safe.

It’s similar to when Louise, mum’s Support at Home volunteer, comes to visit her at home. It’s just knowing that she’s with someone and having a good time that makes you worry that little bit less.

I never thought the Hospice could support me as well as mum so it’s a great comfort knowing that they are there for us, whenever we need their support.”

Thank you Jean for sharing your story with us. On Wednesday 10th July, the whole city will Go Pink! to support more people, just like Merdella, to live well with life-limiting illness.

If you miss the date, you can still Go Pink! any time with friends and family, at school, with your local sports club, at work, or even down the pub! Feel silly with a pink wig, go glam and dress up in your best pink clobber, or treat your mates to delicious pink cupcakes.
