Celebrating our brilliant volunteers

26 June 2026

Birmingham Hospice marked Volunteers’ Week with a host of events to say thank you to the people who selflessly give their own time to support us.

Volunteers’ Week is an annual UK-wide campaign to celebrate and recognises the contribution volunteers make to our society, running this year from Monday 1 – Sunday 7 June.

Last year, 668 volunteers at our hospice contributed around an astonishing 75,000 hours of work – that’s the equivalent of 37 full-time members of staff. Our volunteers work in a wide variety of roles including in catering, our Living Well Centres, spiritual and counselling support, Retail, Reception, our Hive cafés and administration.

Chief Executive Paul Bytheway said: “On behalf of our everybody at Birmingham Hospice can I thank every single one of our 668 volunteers for the commitment they show to our organisation. We couldn’t do it without you.”

The week started with a breakfast celebration at our Selly Park site, followed by an evening event hosted at our new Solihull superstore and concluded with a wonderful afternoon tea at the Erdington site.

Each of our volunteers received a special certificate in recognition of their efforts.

Head of Volunteering Hannah Atkins said: “Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at Birmingham Hospice.

“During Volunteers’ Week, we took the opportunity to celebrate and recognise the incredible contribution they make every day.

“Their compassion, commitment, positivity, kindness, skills, and generosity help us provide outstanding support to patients, families, and our wider community.”

Across the course of Volunteers’ Week we shared stories from people who give their time to help our hospice.
