Workplace adjustments and recruitment

Birmingham Hospice is a Disability Confident Employer which demonstrates our commitment to employing and retaining disabled colleagues. We work hard to ensure our recruitment process is inclusive, accessible and appreciate that some candidates may benefit from adjustments to this process. We support disabled candidates that request adjustments and ensure they are actioned.

By disclosing your disability using our equal opportunity form, we can make sure that any adjustments, can be made quickly to enable a positive candidate experience. We regularly review our equality, diversity and inclusion data to ensure our recruitment processes are equitable and inclusive.

What is a disability?

The Equality Act 2010 defines a disability as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. If your condition meets this definition, then you can request adjustments to the recruitment process.

What constitutes a reasonable adjustment varies from person to person. To help us to assess a requested adjustment, we may ask for the nature of your disability or the impact it would have on you during the recruitment process. This helps us to ensure we are providing the right adjustments and may allow us to make alternative suggestions if appropriate.

How to request an adjustment during the recruitment process

Upon receiving notification of an invite to interview, you will be asked if you require any adjustments to support your interview. Please contact the hiring manager, who can ensure that this is implemented for you.

Examples of adjustments

There are a range of different adjustments that we can put into place that are tailored to support candidates. These are assessed on a case-by-case basis, but some examples could include:

  • Added time to allow for candidates to reflect on answers,
  • Online interviews,
  • Moving interview locations to accommodate wheelchair use
  • Changing the interview room lay out

Adjustments are not restricted to interview questions; these can also be in place for assessments or presentations, where a candidate may need extra time or specific tools to support.
