Tina Whale, from Bourneville, saw the impact that Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s services have during her father David’s final days. She is now sharing her story and thanking the staff who supported Tina and her family during a truly devastating time.

“Dad had suffered all of his life with asthma and also Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

“In December 2018 my Dad spent a few weeks in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. When he returned home St Mary’s staff came in daily to offer help and support to him and my mother from the Care at Home Service.”

Staff were wonderful, considerate and valuable

“They made Dad as comfortable as they could and sorted out a hospital bed. If it hadn’t been for the staff, we wouldn’t have known Dad was slipping away fast. They said on a visit that they thought he only had a couple of days left, which gave us time to prepare.

“They were right. We all took leave from work to spend the last few days with him. This was valuable time that we wouldn’t have had if it hadn’t been for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice staff. Staff were wonderful, considerate and valuable.”

Continued support

To remember her father and continue supporting the Hospice, Tina and her family will be embarking on one of St Mary’s fundraising events this September.

“Myself, my partner Anthony, my sister Diane, my brother Phillip, his wife and three children are all doing the Enchanted 10k Walk from Rowheath Park on Saturday, September 11, 2021.

“Myself, my mom and my family wish to send a massive thank you for all of the help, kindness and support.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
