The Christmas dinner that takes the cake!

29 December 2015

Patients and staff at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice were treated to a Christmas dinner with a difference.

What looks like a turkey and all the trimmings is in fact a cake! The festive feast was crafted by Birmingham-based cake artist Annabel de Vetten.

It took two and a half days to make the impressive cake which Annabel, 44 from Kings Heath created to support the hospice’s ‘Care at Christmas campaign.

Staff and patients were amazed as they tucked into the turkey and vegetables which were made entirely out of sponge cake, buttercream, marzipan and chocolate.

Cake artist Annabel who runs her own business, Conjurer’s Kitchen wanted to bring some Christmas cheer to the hospice with her alternative Christmas dinner.

“Not everyone can celebrate Christmas at home, so I decided to donate a ‘Christmas Turkey dinner’ cake to staff, patients and their families at the hospice. A sweet spin on the traditional dinner always creates amazement and really makes people smile. It’s only a little thing compared to the incredible work the nurses do, but I’m hoping this fun cake will give everyone at the hospice a pleasant memory and make them smile at the same time, even for just a little while.”

Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice provides free care for over 1,200 patients, 365 days a year including Christmas Day. For more information on how to get involved in the #CareatChristmas campaign or to donate visit careatchristmas.org
