On Saturday 20 September, we will once again be welcoming hundreds of fun runners to take part in Birmingham’s Rainbow Rush.
Taking place at Cofton Park, supporters will run through a sea of colour, and tackle a course that includes inflatables, dance zones, foam and lots of paint. Participants can take on the 5k route or new for this year is the addition of a 2.5k option – perfect for littler legs!
Runners can arrive from 9.30am to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy live music, delicious food, face-painting and photo opportunities. The event is open to everyone no matter their age or fitness level, and every runner who crosses (or slides) over the finish line will receive their own commemorative Rainbow Rush medal.
People from across the city are encouraged to sign up and raise vital funds for Birmingham Hospice. The charity provides expert, specialist and compassionate palliative and end of life care for around 670 people living with a terminal diagnosis every day.
This year, we must raise £7.2 million to continue providing its care to people living with a terminal illness – people like Poppy-Rose’s grandad Michael Swain.
After being diagnosed with lung cancer in September 2019, Michael was given the all clear following surgery. However, in 2022, he was informed that his illness has returned. “My Grandad was told nothing further could be done and his cancer was terminal – it was the most heartbreaking news,” recalls Poppy.
“In January 2023, he was referred to Birmingham Hospice as an inpatient, and he was so looked after,” says Poppy. “The staff maintained my Grandad’s dignity; they were caring, gentle, kind and understanding.” Wanting to give something back to the hospice, Poppy signed up for Rainbow Rush with her friends Ei, Elysia, Chloe and Keira and her boyfriend Flynn, and between them they raised an incredible £225.
Reflecting on the event, Poppy said: “The day was so much fun – all the colour, music, food, foam – it was all just perfect! The atmosphere was incredible and everyone was so supportive of each other – many were taking part in remembrance of loved ones.”
Emily Boate, Events Manager at Birmingham Hospice, added: “We’re thrilled to be bringing Birmingham’s Rainbow Rush back this September. Last year’s event was a huge success, and it was great to see the rainbow of runners having such a blast.
“We need support from our community now more than ever and we can’t wait to paint Cofton Park with colour, love and laughter in aid of local hospice care.”
