After his partner Bethany Lane’s mother Joanne Lane passed away at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice in March 2014, Mitchell Perry decided to gather together his friends and embark on a massive fundraising effort in her memory.
After setting up one of the largest Great Birmingham Run teams, the group started the fundraising efforts with two events, a football match at Redditch United football ground and a Garden Party at the Great Stone Pub in Northfield.
The football match raised over £750 between teams, ‘Substandard Liege’ and ‘Expect Toulouse’ and was held on May 11 2014. The game received much support from local businesses including Futura Group who sponsored the event. Over 162 people attended the event and funds were raised from pre-sold tickets, programmes, and popular handmade bracelets.
Organiser Mitch Perry said: “I’ve never done anything like this before. Until you lose someone close, you don’t realise how important it is to try and make a difference and give something back. I am so grateful for the work that St Mary’s have done, and continuing to do for the Lane family.”
