On Wednesday 4th November, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice officially launched their Memory Tree- a beautiful piece of artwork situated in the Hospice reception.
Sponsored by Simpex Express Ltd, a local transport company, the wooden structure is made up of 600 leaves and offers a unique and special way for people to keep memories alive. Families can choose either a gold, silver or bronze leaf to inscribe with the name of their loved one, each colour has a different donation value.
Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is one of the first Hospice’s in Birmingham to have a Memory Tree.
Chief Executive, Tina Swani who launched the tree to Hospice staff, supporters and volunteers said: “Every so often families want to be able to leave something in the name of a loved one and by donating a leaf to the Memory Tree you can now do that.
“This is a lovely way to remember somebody and also know that you’re supporting the care that’s going to support other people who will benefit the experience from the care that we provide.”
Supporter Janine Mawby was also there with her family at the launch to see her leaf, in memory of her granddad Thomas Mawby being placed on the tree. Fighting back the tears, Janine said: “This was a way of saying thank you to the staff and nurses. They’ve all done such a lovely job looking after granddad and he was able to keep his dignity. We just wanted to give something back. That’s why we donated and dedicated a leaf.”
The Memory Tree will also help raise vital funds to help terminally ill patients and their families. Families will have the opportunity to renew their donation and keep their leaf displayed or they can take it home as a keepsake.
