‘Making Time’ is a project by artist Carolyn Morton that explores how making with our hands can help us to make sense of our lived experiences; making time to look differently at the world, our place in it and pause to reflect upon it.
The project took the form of an artist residency at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, funded by Arts Council England from March – June 2018. Carolyn divided her time between working in her studio to make, reflect and prepare for activities at the hospice, and to deliver weekly sessions at the hospice. She gave presentations to staff, led workshops and worked one-on-one with patients.
During the month of July, work made by patients, staff and Carolyn is being displayed in and around the hospice, as both framed artworks, artefacts and interventions into the building and its work.
Carolyn says, “We all need to connect with those around us, sharing ourselves and our lives. Staff and patients took risks in trying something new, learning about themselves and others through a different sort of conversation.”
