A team of nurses from Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice have been shortlisted as finalists in BBC Radio WM’s prestigious Community Champion Award – a category in the Pride of Birmingham Award.
The nurses, who are part of the Community Palliative Care Team, are made up of Clinical Nurse Specialists who deliver care to terminally ill patients in the comfort of their own home.
They have been selected for their exceptional work in the community, which includes clinical care, providing psychological, spiritual and social support to patients – some of which only have weeks to live.
The nurses are a highly skilled team who work with local people from all backgrounds. They also work with GP’s and District Nurses which helps to spread more care to people across the city.
Kate Palmer, Clinical Nurse Specialists representing the Team, said: “We’re overwhelmed at the nomination, let along being selected as finalist. For us it’s all about the care we give, and that’s not only clinical care, it’s also about emotional support to patients, families and carers.
“We work as a team, and simply couldn’t function without the support of each other. Winning would be a real thrill, who knows what the result will be. Either way, it’s all very exciting for all of us at the Hospice.”
The Hospice cares for over 1,000 terminally ill people every year, and offers a range of free services.
