Corporate kindness in action: a special gift for a young Blues fan

22 October 2025

Birmingham Hospice’s Personal Health Budget (PHB) Team is currently caring for a young patient who is a passionate Birmingham City FC fan and, wanting to go the extra mile for him and his family, they got in touch with the hospice’s Corporate Fundraising Team to see if they could help make something special happen.

Our Corporate Fundraising Team then approached Birmingham Business Park’s Social Value Committee, an initiative created by Lori McDonagh, to encourage companies across the park to embrace social responsibility and give back to the local community, with the young man’s story and the PHB team’s wish to do something memorable for him.

Deeply moved by the story, Scott and Shawna from Open Study College decided to step in and help make every moment matter. Their team generously purchased a brand-new Birmingham City FC shirt for the patient – a small but meaningful gesture that brought a huge smile to his face and comfort to his family. “We are incredibly grateful for their kindness, compassion and swift action in making this happen,” said Luke Manley, Corporate Fundraising Manager. “It’s a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved when our community comes together for a shared purpose.”

Reflecting on the donation, Scott Baker, Head of Internal Sales and Operations at Open Study College, said: “It was great to meet Luke and hear about all the amazing work Birmingham Hospice do. When Luke shared the story about a young man currently with the hospice, we wanted to support any which way we could, and as he was a Blues supporter we offered to donate a football shirt to him. Myself and the team at Open Study College are looking forward to working more with this great charity and raising awareness for the fantastic work they do for those in palliative and end of life care.”

Kate Miley from the PHB Team said: “We cannot say thank you enough for the generosity shown to our young man in the Birmingham area. The football shirt will mean so, so much to him. We would not be able to support our patients’ wishes without the incredible help and generosity from community.”
