Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has been named as one of the Midlands’ most innovative healthcare and education organisations, a new report finds.
Our charity features in the inaugural ‘Innovation 50’ report – an in-depth index of the fifty most forward-thinking businesses in the region.
The report was published earlier this week by law firm Mills & Reeve, and aims to celebrate the Midlands’ most pioneering and ambitious companies from a number of key sectors, including ‘healthcare and education’.
Our Hospice – which provides vital care to individuals and families living with terminal illness – was selected by an expert panel of judges for its recently launched ‘Satellite Clinics’.
Recognising that there are barriers to hospice care within local communities, we set up our Satellite Clinics to make crucial end of life care more accessible to more people.
Based at medical centres in Sparkbrook, Bartley Green and Cape Hill, the clinics are run by medical consultants and clinical nurse specialists who provide a wide range of services, including end of life care, symptom management and carer support. The initial pilot was generously funded by voluntary, public donations.
Tina Swani, chief executive at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “Innovation has played a crucial role in helping us to reach even more people across our communities and so we are honoured that this has been recognised in the Innovation 50 report.
“Hospice care is changing. With a growing population and a rise in multiple and complex conditions, we have seen an increase in demand for our services. Sadly though, there are still barriers for some people to access vital end of life care – whether that’s due to geography or a misconception of what a hospice can offer.
“Our Satellite Clinics are an innovative solution in tackling this issue as they bring our high-quality care closer to the communities where people and their families live. We’re already seeing the positive impact they are having and believe this approach will make a significant difference to Birmingham, Sandwell, and beyond.”
The Satellite Clinics form part of our new strategy ‘Hospice Care For All’, which is a four year plan that aims to reach more individuals and their families across Birmingham, Sandwell and beyond.
The Innovation 50 report features 50 businesses from six key sectors, including ‘manufacturing and engineering’, ‘retail, consumer and leisure’, ‘science and technology’, ‘digital and creative’ and ‘business services’, as well as ‘healthcare and education’.
