A fond farewell to our Quinton charity shop

11 November 2025

After 16 wonderful years serving the Quinton community, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our shop on Quinton Road West.

Despite lots of effort and promotions, footfall in the area has remained too low to sustain the shop financially.

Jonathan Varley, Head of Retail for Birmingham Hospice, said: “This has been a very difficult decision to make. Our Quinton shop has been a valued part of the community for 16 years, and we’re so grateful to everyone who has supported us over that time.”

“As a charity, we have a responsibility to ensure every pound we spend is working as hard as possible to provide vital hospice care. Charity shops need high footfall to generate the sales required to cover costs and raise funds for our patients and families. Sadly, despite the dedication of our wonderful team, footfall at the Quinton location has remained too low to sustain the shop.”

All dedicated staff and volunteers from the Quinton shop have been offered alternative opportunities within our other Birmingham Hospice shops across the region.

“Our team at Quinton has been absolutely incredible,” Jonathan added. “Their commitment and passion have been outstanding. We want to express our heartfelt thanks to every shopper, donor, and team member who has supported the Quinton shop since we opened our doors. Your kindness has helped raise vital funds for our hospice and for the local communities we serve.”

Thank you, Quinton, for 16 incredible years of support .

This decision only affects our Quinton shop only. All our other hospice shops remain open and continue to welcome shoppers and donors.

You can continue to support our work by visiting any of our other shops, or by donating, volunteering or fundraising. Find your local shop here

Why is the Quinton charity shop closing?

Despite lots of effort and promotions, footfall in the area has remained too low to sustain the shop financially.

Charity shops rely on high footfall areas to attract enough customers to generate the sales needed to cover running costs and, crucially, to raise funds for our hospice care. Without sufficient footfall, even the most dedicated team and the best donated items struggle to reach enough potential customers.

Why make this decision now?

As a charity, every penny counts. We have a responsibility to use our resources as effectively as possible to provide the best care for our patients and their families. While closing any shop is difficult, especially one that’s been part of a community for so long, we must make tough decisions when a shop is no longer generating vital funds for hospice care. This allows us to redirect our resources and energy to areas where we can make the greatest impact and raise more funds to support our essential work.

When will the shop close?

By the end of November we will have removed the shop fixtures and fittings, and our lease will end in December 2025.

Will any other shops be affected?

No. This decision only affects our Quinton shop. All our other hospice shops remain open and continue to serve their communities, you can find your local shop here.

What will happen to the staff and volunteers?

Our dedicated staff and volunteers have been offered alternative opportunities within our other hospice shops. We’re incredibly grateful for their commitment and everything they’ve contributed over the years.

Can I still donate items?

Yes, absolutely! We’d love to continue receiving your donations at any of our other hospice shops. https://www.birminghamhospice.org.uk/shop/our-shops/

Can I still shop with you?

Yes, please do! We have 24 other shops across the region that would love to welcome you. Your continued support helps us provide vital care to our patients and their families.

Where can I find my nearest hospice shop?

You can find your local shop here.

I’d like to thank the Quinton team personally. How can I do this?
