Generous solicitors and will writers from across the West Midlands are supporting a local hospice’s ‘Make a Will Month’ this March – offering people a cheaper way to sort their will whilst showing their support for a charity.
From Monday 4 to Friday 29 March, a number of solicitors and will writers will be waiving their usual fees and asking for a charitable donation to be made to Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice instead.
Suggested donations are £100 for a single will, which typically cost £185, or £125 for a joint will, which costs £225 on average. For wills requiring more specialist advice, the solicitors will agree a fee in advance.
All funds raised through Make a Will Month will go towards the Hospice, which supports people to live well with life-limiting illness.
Derek Spinks, senior fundraising manager at Birmingham St Mary’s, said: “Your will is such an important document and yet, so many people still don’t have one. Having a will has many benefits but ultimately, it gives you peace of mind that your loved ones will be provided for in the future.”
“Taking part in Make a Will month is a less expensive way of getting your affairs in order, whilst supporting a fantastic cause at the same time. We have lots of solicitors and will writers taking part this year who can make sorting your will as simple as possible – you can arrange a home visit, complete it online, or even visit the solicitor at their office if that’s more convenient for you.”
It costs £8 million to run Birmingham St Mary’s vital services every year, over 60 per cent of which must come from voluntary donations.
Derek added: “Thank you to all the solicitors and will writers who are generously giving up their time to support this campaign. A £100 donation for a single will could go towards vital bereavement care at the Hospice, helping a family recover after the death of a loved one.”
This year, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice will be celebrating 40 years of care across Birmingham and Sandwell. When the Hospice first opened in 1979, it could care for 25 people on any given day. Four decades later and the Hospice is supporting over 400 people every day, providing care in people’s homes, in the community, at its Day Hospice facility and at the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit.
