Whilst organising the third event in the company’s Global Development project, event organiser Nicola Delaney came up with the idea of adding a charitable element for the first time.

Nicola, and Driveline Leadership programme representative Liam Rickards visited the Hospice to deliver the books.

Nicola said: “Liam and I were privileged and honoured to attend the exchange, and pleased to see so closely, the small difference that GKN has made to this very special facility. It is difficult to do something for a local charity when the programme is global, as lots of the delegates already support charities in their home countries. We thought the books would be a good idea as delegates could pick something personal and it would represent the diversity of Birmingham’s population. We chose Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice as they looked after Malcom Bird, a former Director at GKN last year before he passed away, so the connection was there for everyone attending”

Delegates were asked to bring a book with them that was from their favourite place, or the country they were born in. They were then told to write their names, along with a message inside the cover.

Nicola added “We had some really beautiful messages inside the book, including one lady who dedicated her book about the Lake District to her dog who had recently passed away as it was his favourite place to be taken for a walk. There are also some real treasures, like a collection of stories all the way from Shanghai”

Community Fundraiser, Amy Moore said: “We are all so excited about the book donation; it is really heart-warming when you think that they were all carefully selected from all over the world. All of the books are now in the Hospice Butterfly lounge, where they can be enjoyed by patients and families for years to come”
