"We all get on well and work together as a team"

Sue Sloane started as a volunteer at our Erdington store and enjoyed the work so much that she progressed to become an Assistant Manager, and is now Manager of our Wylde Green store.

She said the hospice shops were a great place to work, with everyone going out of their way to help new starters feel welcome. With a less pressurised environment than some other retail employers, and the chance to get involved in lots of areas early on, she suggested it could be a good way to build experience for someone looking to start out in their career or re-enter the workplace.

Sue Sloane in shop

“I’m so fortunate to have such a great bunch of people to work with; we all get on well and work together as a team. Anyone starting with us gets an introduction to all areas of the shop – everyone is able to multitask, and that’s what we look for. It’s quite hands-on but it is a fairly relaxing atmosphere.

“Not only do we form relationships among the staff, we have great relationships with our customers as well. They’ll come in and have a chat, and we can point them towards things we know they’d like.

“We’re very fortunate that we do get some fabulous donations. We get a lot of vintage stuff, which we can get some decent prices for, and that’s now one of our most popular areas.”
