This Saturday, 21st June, Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice will be hosting a Birthday celebration with an international twist on Selly Park Recreation Ground.

The fun day is all part of the Hospice’s continuing year of celebrations to mark 35 years of care in Birmingham and Sandwell.

Highlights include performances from Band Baja, one of the biggest Indian and Asian wedding music bands in the UK and Europe, a Didgeridoo workshop and a collaboration with The Drum, the UK’s Premier Intercultural Arts Centre that will see African Roots Fusion Band (ARFBi) take the stage.

Visitors to the fun day will be able to enjoy the performances alongside a range of delicious street foods, including traditional Caribbean dishes from MCK Catering and the award – winning ‘Great British Toastie’ from the Jabberwocky food stall.

Ian Sergeant, Arts Development Outreach Manager at The Drum Arts Centre said: “We were thrilled to be asked to be a part of the celebrations”

He added: “Anything that brings together the community in this way is a real priority of the Drum’s and we are looking forward to working with the Hospice”

Entry to the event, the first of its kind on Selly Park, is free and as well as live performances families can enjoy traditional carnival games and craft stalls.

Event organiser Hamish Shilliday said: “This event is all about recognising 35 years of care across Birmingham and what better way to do it than in our local community. Birmingham is such a diverse place to live, it is important that the rich cultural tapestry of our city is represented”

He added “Anyone enjoying the event will also be helping us to pay tribute to the work of staff and volunteers past and present. All funds raised on the day will help us to continue this work for years to come, so please join us!”

Younger family members will also be able to enjoy meeting popular character’s Peppa Pig and one of Despicable Me character Gru’s faithful minions.
