At Birmingham Hospice our teams are committed to improving the quality of life for people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families and loved ones during one of the most challenging periods they will ever face.

We are seeking a Speciality Doctor in Palliative Care Medicine to join our dynamic medical team in a substantive post.  You will support our multidisciplinary team by providing consistent and outstanding medical care on the inpatient unit, alongside our other medical staff and the rest of the multi-disciplinary team.

As our Speciality Doctor you will:

  • Provide a supporting role in the clinical care of patients and families across inpatient and day hospice settings
  • Support the education programmes within the hospice, teaching a variety of staff and students what good palliative care looks like
  • Assist with the governance needs of the inpatient unit
  • Support the post holder to develop experience of Palliative Medicine and enhance skills in end of life care.

You will be expected to work flexibly between our two sites at Erdington and Selly Park depending on clinical need.

The on call will cover both bases and it is expected that you would be able to arrive at the hospice within an hour if required to assess a patient out of hours.

If this sounds like the role for you, we’d love to receive your application.

For further information or an informal chat, please email Palliative Consultant Dr Clare McKiernan at clare.mckiernan@birminghamhospice.org.uk.

Individuals who join the hospice from the NHS or another hospice will have the employee’s continuous previous service with any NHS employer recognised in respect of pension provision and annual leave.

“After I saw the care my dad received at the hospice, I knew I wanted to work there.”

Barbara Bennett, a Healthcare Assistant at Birmingham Hospice’s Erdington site, was inspired to join the hospice after seeing the expert palliative care her dad, Frederick, received there.

Having worked in healthcare for 30 years, Barbara decided it was time she went into palliative and end of life care after helping to care for her father when he was diagnosed with heart failure, kidney failure and dementia.
