The Hospice is committed to the continued training and development of each team member. You will be supported in learning when it is essential or beneficial to your role or personal development, identified through the annual appraisal process in line with our Learning and Development Policy.
Working hours that work for you
Sometimes the 9-5 just isn’t an option. We don’t want that to prevent you from joining our team, which is why we offer flexible working arrangements.
Generous holiday allowance
Allowing our team to take a break is important to us. We offer 27 days per annum on appointment, rising to 29 days after 5 years of service and 33 days after 10 years of service, pro rata for those working part time hours. Previous service with the NHS is taken into account when calculating entitlements. There are also 8 Bank Holidays, pro rata for part time staff.
Taking the pain out of admin, 24/7
CONNECT Self Service is our online HR & Payroll system which allows you to view your pay slips, request annual leave, update your personal details and book training. All this is accessible on any device 24/7. Full training will be provided when you begin your employment with us.
A choice of pension schemes
Upon joining our team, you will be automatically enrolled onto the NEST pension scheme. The Hospice also has a Scottish Widows Pension Scheme available for all staff following three months of service. Additionally, provided you meet the qualification criteria set out by NHS Pensions, employees who currently contribute to the NHS Pension Scheme will be eligible to apply to continue these contributions. Please note Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is a Direction Employer of NHS Pension and consequently there may be some differences in benefits.
Taking the worry away in times of sickness
We offer an Occupational Sick Pay Scheme. Your entitlement to OSP will increase with service. After successful completion of your probationary period, you are entitled to one month’s full pay and one month’s half pay, inclusive of any SSP entitlement, in the first and second year of employment. In years 3 and 4, this entitlement will increase to two months’ full pay and two months’ half pay inclusive of any SSP entitlement. In year 5, this will increase to three months’ full pay, and three months’ half pay inclusive of any SSP entitlement.

The Hospice has an Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Group to ensure we provide inclusive and accessible services, and create a diverse and inclusive workplace. We celebrate a variety of cultural events including Eid, Chinese New Year, Hanukkah and Pride, reflecting the diversity of the Hospice team and our patients.
There is a Spiritual Room onsite which can be used by our employees to support them in observing their culture. We also arrange a variety of speakers to share knowledge with staff and volunteers, including End of Life Needs in the Chinese Community and Providing Services to the LGBT Community.
Saving you money when you shop
Hospice employees are eligible to purchase a Blue Light Card for £4.99 which is valid for a period of 5 years. The card offers discounts in the high street and online with many well-known brands including Apple, New Look, Virgin and Go Outdoors. You will also have access to Health Service Discounts which provides discounts on a range of different products including car insurance, holidays, mobile phones and fashion items. There is no registration fee and the benefit is also open to volunteers.
Professional support when you need it
Employees have free access to a helpline which provides access to a counselling service and offers professional support. They can give advice on a range of issues, including; emotional support, stress, relationship difficulties, bereavement, family difficulties, anxiety, debt, and legal advice.
Keeping you healthy – in body and in mind
The Hospice is a member of healthcare scheme, Birmingham Hospital Saturday Fund (BHSF), which provides financial support for a range of healthcare costs such as dental, optical, hospital stays and others. You make a monthly payment through the payroll and may claim benefits according to certain criteria.
We also hold events throughout the year to support staff well-being. These include well-being days, workshops to develop your personal resilience and a variety of social activities. We provide a weekly 30-minute mindfulness meditation session, to benefit both physical and mental health.
Freedom to Speak Up
We support the national Freedom to Speak Up campaign and encourage employees to raise any comments or concerns they may have. We have a Freedom to Speak Up Guardian and a range of Freedom to Speak Up Champions who are available to support. We are proud that 95% of respondents from our latest staff survey said that if they had any concerns, they would know how to report it.
