Volunteering at Birmingham St Mary’s is much more than giving time – it’s a way of enriching your life.

Wherever you are on life’s journey, the hospice has a wide variety of roles so you can have a meaningful impact on others, share new experiences, meet friends, and gain skills and confidence.

There are lots of different and exciting volunteering roles depending on your interests and skills.

Whether you can give a couple of hours a week or several days a month, your time will make all the difference.

Last year, our amazing volunteers gave so much of their time to support us:

  • Volunteer Support Workers had 495 patient contacts last year in person or by phone
  • Family and Carer Support volunteers sent 650 letters to people offering support after a bereavement
  • Fundraising groups raised over £17,000
  • 110 volunteers raised over £9,800 during the Big Brum Bucket Collection Weekend 2018
  • Collection volunteers gave over 350 hours, raising more than £19,900 in 61 collections
  • Collection Box coordinators helped raise £29,180 from collection tins across Birmingham and Sandwell
  • 140 Retail volunteers gave 38,405 hours of their time supporting our shops
  • Gardening volunteers dedicated 495 hours maintaining our garden and grounds
  • Maintenance volunteers spent 120 hours providing safety checks to our fleet of vehicles
  • Reception volunteers committed 2,506 hours, welcoming visitors and answering telephone calls

At the Hospice

    Our Day Hospice is a bright and vibrant place. People come to spend the day with us once a week and for a 12-week programme. This helps them to live their lives in the best way they can, providing social support and learning the skills they need to live well from day to day.

    We are expanding this service and are now looking for new volunteers to support us with this expansion.

    We are looking for:

    Drivers – driving our vehicles or your own vehicle to collect patients and take them home.

    Hospitality volunteers – to welcome patients and those who care for them, support with meals and refreshments and be a listening ear.

    As we increase the number of days we open our Day Hospice, we need to recruit more volunteers to support us.

  • Complementary Therapists

    Various daytime shifts available: Monday – Friday

    As our services develop, we are looking for more Complementary Therapists to provide valued support to patients and carers.

    Our volunteer Complementary Therapists provide hands-on Complementary Therapies for the primary purpose of psychological well-being and approved therapies are currently Aromatherapy, Massage, Indian Head Massage and Reflexology. Treatments are carried out on site where we have a dedicated treatment room within the Day Hospice.

    Suitable volunteers must have recognised qualifications and experience in the approved therapies, membership of an appropriate professional body, full insurance and a desire to learn especially about palliative care.

    Interested therapists are welcome to visit and, for those who join the team, we offer excellent support, training, clinical supervision, uniform & expenses.

  • Butterfly Lounge Volunteer

    The Butterfly Lounge Volunteer will enhance the image, reputation and income of Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, by creating a positive first impression, providing excellent customer service and maximising sales of refreshments and.

     Duties would include;

    • Preparing the service area prior to opening
    • Opening, closing and securing the Butterfly Lounge in accordance with local procedures
    • Keeping the Butterfly Lounge environment clean and tidy for example wiping tables, tidying books and updating Hospice information
    • Presenting and displaying food items in an appealing manner ready for sale
    • Serve drinks and light refreshments to customers
    • Familiarisation with product range and prices
    • Displaying and rotating stock in the cabinet display
    • Cash handling and operating the till
    • Cashing up and cash security

    Experience:

    Previous experience of providing customer service and cash handling skills, together with Basic Food Hygiene knowledge is desirable however full training will be provided.

  • Catering Ward Trolley Volunteer

    The catering ward trolley volunteer plays a key role in assisting in the Catering Department to deliver a high quality service to patients that encourages individual choice and decision making. The Cook in Charge and or the Catering Manager will be on hand to offer support and guidance where needed.

    Duties include;

    •     Prepare for food service times by laying up patient trays
    •     Provide excellent customer service when serving patients, whilst being respectful of their        needs
    •     Encouraging patient choice and independence
    •     Collection of used items from the Ward and Dining Room
    •     Assist with the cleaning of crockery and cutlery by using the dishwasher (optional and            only if training received)

    Experience:

    Previous experience of catering in a health care setting is desirable. Full training will be provided.

  • Gardeners

    Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor

    Location: Hospice Grounds and Gardens

    Hours: Varied up to 4 hours at a time

    Making a Difference – Our garden is enjoyed and used by patients and their visitors, the support from volunteer gardeners is essential to help ensure this area is safe, well looked after and provides a relaxing place to spend time and view from the building.

    From handing out Chocolate at the Chocolate 5K to registering people at the Midsummer Night’s Walk to cheering on runners at the Birmingham Half Marathon, there are lots of exciting events you can volunteer for here at the Hospice.

    This volunteer role is ideal for individuals who only have a few hours to spare on an ad-hoc basis to support your local Hospice.

    Volunteer Collection Box Coordinator

    As a collection box coordinator you will play a valuable role in generating funds for the Hospice as part of a welcoming and friendly team. This role includes supporting the current team in collecting and returning static tins to the Hospice from shops, supermarkets, pubs and cafes. It also involves increasing the amount of static tins we have around Birmingham and Sandwell by sourcing new locations to have our tins.

    Ambassador Coordinator As an ambassador coordinator you will have the chance to be part of a wider welcoming volunteer ambassador network here at the Hospice. This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy organising and like to interact with a wide variety of audiences.     Location: Across Birmingham and Sandwell

    Hours: Flexible (mainly weeknights and weekends – depending on when there is an event)

    Our ambassadors become the face of the Hospice, spreading the message of the fantastic services that we provide to those who are terminally ill and their families across Birmingham and Sandwell.

    Attending supporter fundraising events from gig nights to dinner parties, you will develop your communication skills in a wide range of settings.

  • Retail Team Leaders

    Location: Selly Oak, Bournville, Dorridge, Wychall, Highgate, Bartley Green, Sheldon, Kings Heath, Harborne, Cotteridge, West Heath, Quinton, Kings Norton, Weoley Castle, Yew Tree, Solihull & Northfield.

    Hours: Morning & Afternoon shifts available

    The Retail Volunteer Team Leader supports the shop management team to maximise shop income by taking a lead role in the day to day supervision of the shop. The Retail Team Leader assumes responsibility for the shop and team in the shop management absence.

    Duties would include:

    • Take responsibility for the shop in the absence of the shop management.
    • Maximise shop income by following the Retail Handbook guidelines, ensuring accurate till operations, leading by example by actively promoting Gift Aid, providing an excellent customer and donor experience & working to maintain a high standard of shop presentation
    • Ensure a safe environment for the shop team and customers.
    • Ensure the volunteer team follow the Retail handbook guidelines.
    • Support the training of new volunteers, in all areas of their role
    • Be knowledgeable about the services the Hospice provides, fundraising activities and positively promote them.
