Birmingham Hospice Singers – Conductor

Birmingham Hospice Singers is a ladies’ choir with 20 members which contains Soprano and Alto singers. They give time on a voluntary basis to raise much needed funds for the hospice.

The choir’s current conductor is looking to retire at the end of 2024 and we’re seeking a volunteer to replace them.

The new conductor will assist their piano accompanist during the choir’s rehearsals on Friday evenings at the hospice’s site in Selly Park.

They will also help the choir perform two main concerts in the summer and Christmas, as well as several occasional events.

The Singers’ repertoire is an eclectic mix of folk, show, spiritual, humorous and traditional songs, usually two-part with the occasional second soprano.

The age range is between 35 and 80 years old and we have a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in our rehearsals.

A small fee and expenses may be available for the conductor.

If you are interested in this position and to obtain further information, please contact choir committee member Ann Gough by emailing cagough@outlook.com or calling 07908 190519.

Summer concert success for hospice singers

BIRMINGHAM Hospice Singers held their most successful concert in several years with a triumphant summer 2024 event at Selly Oak Methodist Church.

The presence of pianist and BBC Young Musician of 2018, Lauren Zhang, and her younger brother Aidan, who plays piano, cello and violin, helped to swell audience numbers in June.

The concert raised £1,020, which surpassed the amount from their Christmas Concert in 2023 and has been donated to Birmingham Hospice.

The choir performed songs from many famous musicals including Oklahoma!, the King and I, and Oliver!

They also performed classic spiritual songs and regaled the audience with garden themed American works such as ‘If I Planted a Garden’ and ‘Weave Me a Poem’.

But the highlight was a rousing rendition of Arthur Sullivan’s ‘The Lost Chord’ at the end.
