From Wednesday 17th June, we are accepting donations in the car park outside the front of our Cotteridge Furniture shop, 15 Pershore Road South, Cotteridge, B30 3EE.
- As the shop is situated just off a small busy roundabout and only has a small car park with limited spaces, we will be limiting what and how much people can donate to a maximum of 10 bags (clothing, books etc.) or equivalent sized cardboard boxes (household items, toys etc.) per person/car.
- Open Tuesday to Saturday, 9.00am to 4.00pm – we are closed on Mondays and Sundays.
- Please don’t bring anything too heavy or bulky as we want this to be a quick drop-off process and want to be as fair as we can to everyone.
- Please ensure all bags and boxes are sealed up well.
- If you are signed up for Gift Aid you can label boxes and bags yourself – please attach a label or paper to each bag or box with your postcode, surname and Gift Aid number on, if you have one of our supporter cards.
- We will have electronic tablets to hand to check the database for your number if you can not find it, plus we can also use them to sign you up if you have not donated to us before.

We won’t be accepting bulky items or more than 10 bags/boxes at this stage in the donation station, without prior knowledge or a booking.

- Book a collection, if you’re unable to visit our furniture shop and would like to discuss a possible collection, please fill out the following form – please note you must be donating 10 bin bags or more of stock we can sell to support the Hospice and at this moment, unfortunately we are unable to collect furniture from you until further notice:
Please be patient with us as we anticipate being extremely busy and will obviously be observing social distancing safety measures to protect you, our staff and volunteers.
Please don’t leave donations outside our shops
Although we are truly grateful for items donated by our supporters, we are asking people not to leave these outside our shops. We are sure you will appreciate that there will be no one to bring items inside during this period of isolation.
Can we ask that you save all donations of this nature until our shops open once more. Thank you very much for thinking of us, and we hope to see you all back in our charity shops once they reopen.

What you can donate to our charity
Turn your homeware into hospice care, clothes into counselling, and sofas into support! Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice relies on your generous donations to help raise funds to provide care and support to everyone.
Your small gesture could have a big impact. Just one bag of donated goods could pay for one hour of specialist nursing care.
If you’re clearing out the clutter, we’d kindly appreciate the following items:
- Clothes, shoes and boots (ladies, men’s & children’s)
- Handbags, jewellery and belts
- Bric a Brac items such as cookware, tableware and household goods
- Books, video games, DVDs, CDs and vinyl
- Children’s books, games & toys
- New or boxed electrical items, cameras and multimedia devices.
- Giftware, toiletries, perfumes, soaps – ideal for sale or tombolas. Items must be unused and in their original packaging.
Please make sure all your donations are clean and usable – if you wouldn’t buy it, then we probably won’t be able to sell it.
The better the quality of your items, the less time it takes us to sort & process your donations and the more money we can raise from their sale.
We can also raise money through textiles recycling and welcome any old clothes or textiles that are no longer usable. It is helpful if you can separate these items from your donation and label the bag/box to indicate that it is ‘rag’ where possible.
Donations we can’t accept
It is a cost to the charity to dispose of items that we can’t sell, for this reason we are unable to accept the following items…
Appliances and equipment
- Mains or bottled gas appliances (safety reasons). Includes cookers, fires, lighters and hair-styling tools.
- Microwaves (safety reasons). Costly to test as they require radiation tests.
- Electric fires (safety reasons).
- Oil heaters, petrol or diesel fuelled items (safety reasons).
- Computer hard drives (legal reasons). Copyright law forbids the resale of computers containing software.
- Bicycles (safety reasons). Selling an unsafe bicycle is against the law and can result in a large fine.
- All types of protective headgear (safety reasons). Includes cycle helmets, motorbike helmets, riding hats, hard hats.
- Wheelchairs, wheeled walkers (safety and hygiene reasons). We cannot guarantee infection control. Wheelchairs should only be bought with professional advice to ensure the item is appropriate for the user.
- Firearms and ammunition (legal reasons and undesirability). Includes starting pistols and other blank-firing weapons and ammunition.
- Weapons and realistic toy weapons (legal reasons and undesirability).
- Pointed objects that can be used as weapons (safety and legal reasons). Includes butcher’s knives, flick knives, sports knives, swords, daggers and axes.
- Any goods that infringe the copyright law (legal reasons). Includes pirate DVDs and counterfeit CDs. These can be recognised by the colour of the disc, hologram labelling or poor packaging.
- Pornographic publications, DVDs and videos (legal reasons and undesirability). Includes DVDs and videos classified as R18.
- Any DVDs and videos not legally classified by the British Board of Film Classification (legal reasons and undesirability). Includes DVDs missing classification labels.
- Children’s car seats or booster seats (safety reasons). Second-hand seats often have no or incomplete fitting instructions. Seats that are not installed correctly or are damaged may not be able to protect a child in an accident.
- Baby prams and pushchairs, baby walking frames, door bouncers, baby slings (safety reasons).
- Child safety gates (safety reasons). Second-hand stair gates may not come equipped with all the necessary fittings and fixtures. These are essential for ensuring safety.
- Nursery furniture that contains upholstery (legal reasons). We can accept these if the item complies with The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 and has the relevant label attached, or predates 1950.
- Repainted cots (safety reasons). Cots that have been repainted may contain lead or other substances that may be harmful if chewed.
- Items made of fur (undesirability). Includes new and second-hand items.
- Items made of ivory (legal reasons). The trade in ivory is banned, except for pre-1900 furniture, wooden items or pianos with ivory inlays or keys and items believed to be ‘antique’. An affidavit from an antiques dealer is required to ensure items are sold legally.
- Items made of bone (legal reasons). Includes items made from animals such as elephants, mammoths, walruses and whales.
- Turtle or tortoiseshell items (legal reasons). Applies to items made, in whole or in part, from any part of sea turtles, regardless of the age of the item. Tortoiseshell-patterned items made of plastic or synthetic materials are permitted, but should clearly indicate they are not made of tortoiseshell.
- Items made from endangered species (legal reasons). Endangered species are listed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. This applies to both new and second-hand products, but not to antiques.
- Upholstered foam-filled furniture (legal reasons). We can accept these if the article predates 1950 or complies with The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 and has the relevant label attached.
- Mattresses, pillows and quilts that are not in new, unused, condition (hygiene reasons).
Alongside these listed goods, each of our shops reserves the right to refuse to take or sell items for other reasons not outlined on this page.

Every penny of support that we receive is precious. So, donating through Gift Aid makes perfect sense.
Put simply, if you’re a UK taxpayer, we can claim an extra 25p for every pound you give – and it won’t cost you anything.
Just ask about Gift Aid when you drop off your donation at any of our shops to find out how to get your unique donor number. So every time you bring in a donation that number will be written on each item, meaning we can claim an extra 25% of the selling price from the government.
Claiming Gift Aid on your donations could not be simpler, and it means we will be able to support even more people with life-limiting illnesses.
