Salary: Retail Band 2, £22,369 per year (Actual Salary for 22.5 hours per week, £13,421 per year)

Birmingham Hospice is the leading provider of adult palliative care in the region.  Our charity shops raise vital funds for the hospice, and the generosity of donors and shoppers plays a crucial role in supporting the community, helping us to provide care for local people living with a terminal diagnosis and their families.

We looking for a Relief Assistant Shop Manager (RASM) to join our Retail Team to provide assistance and area cover in our Wylde Green, Erdington, Mere Green and Castle Bromwich shops.

As a RASM you will be assisting the Shop Manager to run the shop, covering their days off and holidays.

No retail experience is required, you just need the drive and determination to do a good job.

 As RASM you will:

  • Own the daily operations in the absence of the Shop Manager.
  • Achieve income targets by maximising sales and donations.
  • Provide the highest level of customer service to donors and customers.
  • Support with accepting, sorting, pricing, steaming and displaying goods for sale to maximise income within agreed guidelines.
  • To effectively lead the shop volunteers. Respectfully supporting their usual tasks and commitments to meet the shops KPI requirements.
  • Understand and lead by example to develop a positive team spirit and actively promote the work of the hospice.
  • Use social media to promote the shop.

From volunteer to manager

Sue Sloane started out as a volunteer at our Erdington outlet, before stepping up to an Assistant Manager position. She is now Manager of our Wylde Green shop.

Sue says: “I wasn’t thinking about doing this as a long-term career at first, but being able to get out of the house and be with people on a daily basis was good for my mental health, and as I progressed, I realised I loved this job which is why I’m still here.”

and it’s great being able to work with such a range of people from 16-year-olds to our volunteer Mabel who’s 83.”
