Saddle Up for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is calling on cyclists of all abilities to take part in their ‘Ride the Reservoir’ challenge. Now in its second year, the Birmingham based charity which cares for over 1,200 terminally ill patients and their families are looking for cyclists of all ages and levels to join them for their ‘Ride the Reservoir’ cycle sportive. Last year’s event raised over £10,000 to deliver much-needed Hospice care. On Sunday 20th March 2016, participants can choose between two scenic routes for the challenge. Starting at the prestigious King Edward VI Five Ways School in Birmingham, cyclists can either take ‘The Family Route’ – a 14km cycle around the reservoir and into the leafy suburbs of Bartley Green or ‘Tour De Bartley Green’ –a 60km hilly challenge starting in Bartley Green and extending into Frankley, Romsley, Chaddesley Corbett, Barnt Green and back to the reservoir. The route rises to a maximum elevation of 274m and incorporates Frankley Beeches, Romsley Hill and the Lickey Hills. Cyclists will be supplied with refreshments and mechanical support throughout the challenge as well as a commemorative gift at the finish line. The event is approved by British Cycling –the national governing body for cycling in Great Britain. Lucy Watkins, Events Manager at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice said: “The support we had for our first ‘Ride the Reservoir’ was fantastic and we’re delighted to bring it back for 2016. We’ve made some changes to the event including two new routes. The ‘Tour De Bartley Green’ is perfect for experienced cyclists whilst ‘The Family Route’ is ideal for families or novice cyclists who are looking to gain confidence on two wheels safely and in a fun environment. It’s a great way to kick start the cycling season or to meet new people all whilst raising vital funds for your local hospice.” Over 100 cyclists from across the West Midlands and Staffordshire have signed up for the challenge but there are still places available.
