You’re hired! From apprentice to IT superstar When Liam Gough joined our Hospice as an IT apprentice two years ago, he instantly excelled with his computer know-how and technical ability. So impressive were his skills in fact, that as soon as he passed his BTEC qualification at college, we were quick to snap him up as a full-time employee. Over the past year, Liam has worked as an ‘IT technician’, playing a pivotal role in setting up new computer systems and safeguarding our network. Sadly, he will be leaving us this week for pastures new but before he went, we sat down with him to discuss his favourite Birmingham St Mary’s memories, what he’ll miss most about our Hospice, and why this won’t be the final goodbye… I first joined Birmingham St Mary’s in 2015, as an apprentice to the IT team. I was studying for a level two BTEC in IT at Bournville College and initially applied for a number of different apprenticeships across the city. I was actually offered six interviews in total – with Birmingham St Mary’s being my first – but I knew as soon as I came here that this would be a brilliant place to work. The people and the general atmosphere was great and so, when they offered me the position that same day, I knew I couldn’t turn it down. When I first started, I was mainly just carrying out the simple day-to-day IT tasks, such as responding to helpdesk tickets and helping staff with computer issues. Whilst I enjoyed this, I was eager to take on more technically challenging jobs. Thankfully, Kal and the rest of the team were very receptive to this and soon after, I was setting up and configuring new IT systems. The following year, I completed my college course and apprenticeship. Due to the complex work I was doing at the Hospice, I was actually awarded a level 3 BTEC despite being on a level 2 course. That was a great achievement and definitely made all the hard work worthwhile. Even better, the Hospice offered me a full-time role, which I quickly took up! One of my favourite tasks whilst working at Birmingham St Mary’s was setting up the service room. It took a lot of time to update the new system across the Hospice and, although it may have been technically demanding, it was worth it. It gave me an opportunity to play with new technology which is what I love doing and is the very reason I wanted to work in IT in the first place. Whilst I don’t directly work with the individuals here at the Hospice, knowing that I am supporting the medical staff who care for them is incredibly rewarding. I’ve learnt a lot about hospice care since being here but what has surprised me most is how upbeat and jolly a hospice can be. It’s the people here that make it so positive. That’s what I’ll miss most actually – the people – as we’ve got a really great, family atmosphere here. And of course, I’ll miss Emma’s Pantry, the local sandwich shop – they do the best double decker sandwich! Working at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice has been a fantastic experience. By being able to get stuck in with challenging tasks, I’ve been able to learn lots of new skills and progress in my career – something that I may not have had the opportunity to do at a bigger IT company. Although I am moving on to a new organisation, this won’t be the last time the Hospice sees me – Birmingham St Mary’s will actually be a client of mine so this isn’t the final goodbye!
