Why Rich is Joining the Big Brum Bucket Collection… Hello all, I’m Rich, the new Digital Officer at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and in September, I’m taking to the streets of Brum to raise money to help care for more patients here at the Hospice! I’ve only been in post a few weeks but since I’ve started working here, the thing that really stands out is just how passionate people are at the Hospice. In my spare time I’m a big fan of animated films and one of my favourites is Princess Mononoke, where I spotted the following saying: “We cannot change our fate, however, we can rise to meet it.” For me I feel this quote completely captures the attitude of Birmingham St Mary’s. Death is something we’re all afraid of but it’s also something that affects us all. The last moments of life are precious and at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice we do all we can to ensure these moments are happy and peaceful ones. I’ve also learnt that as well as our ward here, we also offer Hospice care within patients' own homes. It’s completely understandable that some people want to spend this time in the familiarity and comfort of their own home, which is why our Community Palliative Care Team work with GPs and District Nursing teams to provide vital care and support at home, alongside our Hospice at Home Team. There are lots of services we provide to help families living with terminal illness but I’ve realised that none of it would be possible without the amazing efforts of all of our fundraisers. Our energetic fundraising team run a variety of events and campaigns across the year to help raise vital funds for patient and family care. So that’s why on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th September, I’ll be joining hundreds of staff and volunteers as we take over the city of Birmingham for our Big Brum Bucket Collection and we need as many people as possible! To join me on the streets, please click here and let us know when you’re free. Together, we can make a huge difference to local families living with terminal illness.
